唐斑, Kara-fu, means "Speckled from China," doubtless referring to the speckled variegation (commonly "fu" in horticulture) and the Chinese, or at least foreign origin of the selection. "Kara" is the kun'yomi, native Japanese reading of 唐, compared to the on'yomi "tō" in 'Ara-kawa-tō -kaede'. (ED)
