Wakoh nishiki (Esveld)
和光錦, Wakō-nishiki, means "Wakō Brocade." Wakō is a city in Saitama Prefecture, and now part of the enormous greater Tōkyō conglomeration. This special and difficult maple retains its popularity in Japan due to its almost white leaves, but is very difficult to source in the West. It has been claimed that Hana-chiru-sato is identical, having been stolen by a disgruntled nursery employee before being sold to, and renamed by, a competitor. Indeed it seems impossible to tell the two apart, but for now, at least, they retain separate status. (ED)

Wako nishiki is a variegated upright Acer buererianum. Spring foliage is a bright pink quickly turning to a white reticulated leaf with distinctive green venation. Mid-summer color is a light green with pale yellow to red fall color. Mature height will be in the 15' range, taller than wide. Some shade is recommended for this variety. (DSN)
