Kiyo hime (Esveld) 清姫, or Serene Princess, is the name of a specific character in the Japanese legend of Anchin and Kiyohime. It is therefore not separated or hyphenated. Kiyohime fell in love with a travelling monk, Anchin, who was on pilgrimage. Anchin became concerned at the intensity of her affections, and left, promising to return but not intending to. In her rage, Kiyohime transformed into a great dragon, eventually incinerating the temple bell under which Anchin was hiding, incinerating him. It is a parable for the destructive power of unchecked emotion, so that Kiyohime may be seen in the end as an ironic name. This story is among the most famous and venerable Japanese folktales, and has many different versions, perhaps the most famous in the Nō play Dōjōji. The earliest version is from the 11th century CE, found in Kojoku monogatari shū, a compilation of tales (lit. Tales of Past Times). In this version, the unnamed kiyohime is not a princess but a widow, who climbs into bed with a passing monk; when he refuses her, mad with lust, she chases him and turns into a great snake. As in all versions, the story ends with the monk incinerated under the great bell at Dōjō-ji. (ED)
Kiyohime is a flat-growing, green dwarf maple. The branching is very horizontal, giving the plant a saucer appearance. It can reach widths in excess of 12'. The fall color transitions from yellow to orange. (DSN, as Kiyohime yatsubusa)
