The 1882 spelling 小男鹿 gives the meaning of "Small Buck", and the hyphenation. The pronunciation is given by the Hiragana さおしか, which is good, because it is impossible to make 小 into "sa" directly. In the 1926 version, 小 was changed to 佐, which is being used as an ateji (phonetic spelling) for sa. The meaning of the name remains unchanged. (ED)
Saoshika is a wide growing bushy tree to about 10', in the Amoenum Group. Spring growth is a yellow green tipped with red, fading to a soft green. Leaves are not as glossy or as dark green as Saotome or Shigarami. Falls colors are yellow, orange and red. (DSN)
