ICNCP Name: 'Shiranami'

Formerly 'Shiranami'

The International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants (ICNCP) establishes the rules and regulations for proper naming of plants. When different, the cultivar database displays the correct(ed) ICNCP name, rather than its previous cultivar name.

Japanese Maple Classification:
Matsumurae Group

Hardiness Zone (for guidance only):

5 to 9
白波, means "White Waves", but more precisely "Whitecaps", the breaking foam at the top of waves. Thus it is a single compound word and should not be hyphenated (as Nakajima had it). Some version of this maple remains in the trade, but it is unclear that it reflects the 1704 cultivar. The name is sometimes given as meaning "Light Wave", but that seems incorrect, as that kanji would be 光波 (ED)

Date of Origin if known:

1704
Origin if known:

Vertrees/Nakajima
