ICNCP Name: 'Shirayuki-no-mai'

Formerly 'Shirayuki no mai'

The International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants (ICNCP) establishes the rules and regulations for proper naming of plants. When different, the cultivar database displays the correct(ed) ICNCP name, rather than its previous cultivar name.

Japanese Maple Classification:
Variegatum Group

Hardiness Zone (for guidance only):

5 to 9
Although Nakajima, in an English article, gives us only the rōmaji Shirayuki-no-mai, he tells us the meaning: "Dance of the White Snow." From this we can easily infer the kanji spelling 白雪の舞. Because "Shirayuki", white snow, represents in itself the Japanese concept of purity, it is left un-hyphenated here. (ED)

Date of Origin if known:

2004
