上野誉, Ueno-homare, means "Ueno Honor." At the Battle of Ueno, in what is now Ueno Park in Tōkyō, the Shōgitai -- Samurai elite of the Tokugawa Shōgunate military -- were vastly outnumbered as they tried to protect Prince Tokugawa Yoshinobu, facing 10,000 Imperial warriors, with vastly superior weapons, with 1,500 Samurai. A monument in Ueno Park, built by the victorious Imperial regime, honors their unyielding loyalty and courage.
Ueno homare is a member of the Aureum Group with bright orange spring growth fading to a mid-green. Because it leafs out after Katsura, it avoids some of the problematic spring frosts. Ueno yama is considered a synonym. Fall's color is a good orange and red. (DSN)
