和邇, Wani, is a mythical race of sea-creatures (or sea-monsters), who can take the forms of sharks, alligators or even dragons. These creatures were first documented in the Kojiki, "Records of Ancient Matters", in 712 CE. It is Japan's oldest surviving mythological (and historical) chronicle. Wani play a role in several tales, usually connected with the Sea-god and his Palace. (ED)
