山川, Yama-gawa, means quite clearly "Mountain River," evoking the clear colored water and stony shoals, quite appropriate for this maple which develops corky bark. (ED)

Yama gawa is a semi dwarf tree with very narrow linearlobum leaves. It is like Koto no ito, but mature trunk and limbs have a corky bark. It will probably grow to 8 to 10'. Fall color is orange and red. (DSN)
