山姥, Yamanba is how both Yano and Nakajima romanize. Other possibilities are Yamamba or Yamauba. Yamanba is listed in Kenkyusha, so it is an ICNCP compliant spelling. It means "Mountain Witch," a compound noun made up of mountain+old woman. Although in Japanese Folklore she is a horrible and filthy hag who eats babies, she is represented in Noh drama as a more benign "fairy of the mountain, which have been under her care ... She decks them with snow in winter, with blossoms in spring..." [Waley, Arthur. The Nō plays of Japan. New York: A. A. Knopf (1922)] (ED) (Yamamba, dvdm)
