ICNCP Name: 'Kuro-ko-gō-beni'

Formerly 'Kuro kogo beni'

The International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants (ICNCP) establishes the rules and regulations for proper naming of plants. When different, the cultivar database displays the correct(ed) ICNCP name, rather than its previous cultivar name.

黒古光紅, Kuro-ko-gō-beni is a name that describes the leaves of the tree, listed as Acer rufinerve, but which Yano believes is Acer capillipes, found on a roadside in Nara. Referencing the leaves, it might be translated "Older dark, then Lighter Red." This describes the older leaves retaining a deep red throughout the summer, as the second flush of lighter greenish-red makes an attractive contrast. The non-standard form of this name leads directly to the separation for the compliant rōmaji. Though both Yano and Nakajima write kogo, the correct on'yomi for 光 is kō, with a macron. (This becomes gō through the standard rendaku voicing change). Were one to write "kogō", the meaning phonetically would be quite different: "old-timer." Further, the kō is associated with beni, not ko (older). Thus, to fulfil the ICNCP imperative for maximum clarity, we separate the two words, allowing the name to be read directly with the correct meaning. (ED)
