ICNCP Name: 'Kumo-i-nishiki'

Formerly 'Kumoi nishiki'

The International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants (ICNCP) establishes the rules and regulations for proper naming of plants. When different, the cultivar database displays the correct(ed) ICNCP name, rather than its previous cultivar name.

雲井錦, Kumo-i-nishiki, means "Sky Brocade," a fitting name indeed for this beautiful variegate with slashed and speckled white on the light green, the reddens as the season advances and it takes sun, forming a gorgeous pastiche resembling the tints of sunset. Note that, although the archaic form for Sky (=雲井) might seem obviously a single concept, Kenkyusha 4th ed. specifically hyphenates, so directing us that the compliant Modified Hepburn form is indeed hyphenated. Poetically 雲井 may also be interpreted as "Heaven's Dwelling." (ED)

Kumoi nishiki is an excellent variegated Acer sieboldianum. Spring foliage has bright white variegation flecked throughout the leaf. Vigorous new growth shows less variegation. The plant gets better with age. Fall color is a bright red, showing conspicuous variegation. (DSN, as Ku moi nishiki)
