緑花雌瓜, Ryokka-meuri, means "Green-Flowered A. crataegifolium", (lit. Female Melon, one of the Japanese common names for this maple.) The first word is formed of Ryoku + ka, both on'yomi (Sino-Japanese) readings of the more familiar kun'yomi, native Japanese, readings "midori" and "hana." Phonetically, the 'u' in ryoku is dropped or absorbed, (elided), and the k germinated to form a single word with a double 'k' 促音, sokuon), leaving us with a single compound word Ryokka, from 緑花. 雌瓜, = mesu+ri, becomes meuri, one of the common names for this maples.
