MAPLE OF THE YEAR
Begun by past president Matt Nichols, this annual event allows members to nominate and select their favorite maple. Winners are selected based on how attractive they are, how hardy they are in most North American zones, and how readily available they are in the trades.
Acer palmatum dissectum 'Seiryu'
Sieryu is a beautiful upright Acer palmatum laceleaf with a graceful spreading form. Spring foliage is a bright green that gives the plant a delicate appearance. Seiryu is a strong grower with excellent orange and red fall foliage. It will eventually exceed 18' in height and be wider than tall.
Geisha Gone Wild
Acer palmatum 'Geisha Gone Wild'
Geisha gone wild is a selected sport from Geisha. Colors range from pink to cream on green to purple leaves. It is a much better grower than Geisha, but only to 8–10 feet, and more wide than tall. Fall color is purple orange.
Acer palmatum 'Osakazuki'
Osakazuki is a large-leafed green palmatum recognized for its outstanding red fall color. Spring new growth is an orange-pink and has a heavy red seed set. Osakazuki is a large, big boned grower reaching up to 20' tall by 15' wide. The name means big cup of sake.
Acer palmatum 'Shishigashira'
Shishigashira forms an uptight, sculptured vase with curled green leaves. The compact growth makes the plant ideal for small gardens or for bonsai. The fall color is an outstanding orange and red. It is also known as the Lion's Head maple.
Acer palmatum 'Shindeshojo'
Shindeshojo is a variegated upright with flaming pink-scarlet leaves in spring. Its summer color is a mottled green and its fall color is a brilliant red. It has better color than and lasts longer than any flowering tree. Shindeshojo is taller than Beni maiko but still will only grow to be approximately 12 to 14'
Acer palmatum dissectum 'Orangeola'
Orangeola is a strongly cascading dissectum with bright orange-red spring foliage. Spring color is distinctive enough to be identified from a distance. The leaves fade to a rich red-green in the summer and a second flush of orange leaves gives the plant a two-toned effect. The fall color is a fiery orange-red.
Acer shirasawanum 'Moonrise'
Moonrise is a new Acer shirasasawanum introduced by Carl Munn. It is a much better grower than Aureum and other golden A. Shirasawanum. It has distinctive orange, pink and red spring foliage. Mature height is unknown but probably in the 12 to 14' range, wider than tall. Fall color is an excellent orange red.
Acer palmatum 'Mikawa yatsubusa'
Mikawa yatsubusa is an excellent green dwarf with leaves that overlap like shingles on a roof. It grows in an irregular shape with some branches growing more vigorously than others, giving the plant a distinctive alien-like appearance. It is a larger dwarf with final height and width exceeding 12'. Mikawa yatsubusa's fall color is an outstanding orange and red. Fall color photo is by Talon Buchholtz.
