茶花雌瓜, given by Nakajima with a pronunciation of さかめうり, Saka-meuri, is an enigmatic name. Although 雌瓜, mesu-uri (female melon) may be contracted as meuri, it is difficult to get from 茶花, normally Chabana, to Saka. However, by using the on'yomi (Sino-Japanese) reading for 花, hana, we have "ka." Now, Chaka is phonetically close to Saka, allowing both an approach as an ateji (phonetic spelling) and a regional dialect, where Cha/Sa would be pronounced similarly. Urihada kaede (Melon-rind Maple) explains the many melons we encounter in crataegifolium epithets, and here we end up with something close to "Tea-flower on a Female Melon." (ED)
