Although the origin of the epithet is uncertain, it is a correct and sensible Japanese epithet: 黄ばむ, Kibamu, means "To Turn Yellow." Perhaps the maple has yellow fall color, explaining the epithet. Kibamu is a Godan (Five Step) verb for conjugation, and it is not hyphenated. The root (in this case 黄, ki = yellow) is followed by bamu, forming a single verb with the afore-mentioned meaning. This type of verb can be made out of many roots, e.g. akabamu (赤ばむ) = "Becoming Red." (ED)
