扇の山, Ōginosen, is a touristic 1309 m high volcano in Tottori Prefecture. This cultivar gained its name there, selected from among the wild Acer japonicum seedlings. The mountain's name may be taken to literally mean "Mountain of Fans," but as a place-name, it is compliantly written without hyphens. It is known for it's impressive Beech forests, excellent hiking and bird watching. (ED)
