Formerly 'Kawahara no midori'

Japanese Maple Classification:
Palmatum Group

Hardiness Zone (for guidance only):

Kawahara no midori (dvandermaat), This name requires a little unpicking, but likely Kawahara-no-midori is a rōmaji for 川原の緑, meaning "Green Riverbed." This ties in well with the morphology of this very green plant.

Spring foliage is a pale green, lighter in color than Aoyagi with a narrow white variegation along the leaf edge. Twigs are a bright green for winter interest, and autumn foliage is a pure yellow. (DSN, as Kawahari no mirodi) Note that description of the Japanese introduction by Maillot does not mention a variegated margin, and no pictures seem to show it. The maple has been put in the Palmatum Group. (ED)
