ICNCP Name: 'Komagaeri'

Formerly 'Koma gaeri'

The International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants (ICNCP) establishes the rules and regulations for proper naming of plants. When different, the cultivar database displays the correct(ed) ICNCP name, rather than its previous cultivar name.

Japanese Maple Classification:

Hardiness Zone (for guidance only):

5 to 9
The kanji given by Nakajima is 駒帰, which means "Horse returning." There is a mountain pass, written the same in Hiragana ( こまがえり), which uses a slightly different second character, but with the same sound and practically the same meaning: 駒返, "Horse is returned." The conclusion, supported by the existence of Komagaeri-beni, is that the name does indeed reference a place-name, and should not be separated or hyphenated. Therefore the compliant name is Komagaeri. (ED)
