小絞錦, Ko-shibori-nishiki means "Small Dappled Brocade." Shibori brocade is an ancient technique dating back to 238 CE, and examples from 756 CE still exist in Nara. Nakajima belied this maple to be a synonym of the popular Ko-man-nishiki, but in the trade some believe it distinct, so I have left it as such. It may be that the US version has diverged from the Japanese version. (ED)

Koshibori nishiki is a variegated upright with subtle yellow and pink fleck variegation on its yellow-green foliage. It has a very bright orange fall coloring. From a distance Koshibori nishiki appears to be a small leafed palmatum, and this is what the Japanese would call a “plant of homecoming” as it requires a closer look to appreciate its beauty. (Little dappled variegated or fine dress) (DSN) NB, the name translates as "Small Dappled Brocade:, there is no mention of a dress. (ED)
