ICNCP Name: 'Kure-ha'

Formerly 'Kureha'

The International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants (ICNCP) establishes the rules and regulations for proper naming of plants. When different, the cultivar database displays the correct(ed) ICNCP name, rather than its previous cultivar name.

Japanese Maple Classification:

Hardiness Zone (for guidance only):

5 to 9
We have this maple twice, first in 1732 and again in 1914. The 1732 entry has the unusual kanji 呉服, coupled with the Hiragana くれは, telling us it is pronounced Kure-ha. However the Kanji seems unconnected, normally pronounced Kurefuku, it is the standard word for "textiles." The 1914 name however, is given as 呉れ葉, clearly 'Kure-ha' but now with a more appropriate meaning: "Darkening Leaf." So this would be the preferred spelling. (ED)
