紅獅子, Kurenai-jishi, means "Imperial Crimson Lion". This famous maple is considered Acer amoenum, unlike 'Kurenai'. 獅子, Lion, is normally pronounced Shishi, but the inital Shi becomes Ji thanks to a rendaku, or internal consonant change. Kurenai is, like "beni", a native Japanese (kun'yomi) reading of the kanji, but it is a more poetic expression, with deep connections in Japanese Aristocratic Culture. Kurenai was a forbidden color during the Heian period, the dye restricted to clothing for the most noble. For this reason we translate it as "Imperial Crimson." rather than simply "crimson." (ED)

"It has unique, rolling leaves with short internodes" (Yano) Kurenai jishi has the possibility to be like a red Shishigashira. Spring color is a maroon red, fading to a purple green in summer. Mature height and form are unknown. Fall color is yellow and red. (DSN)
