ICNCP Name: 'Ryūsen'

Formerly 'Ryûsen'

The International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants (ICNCP) establishes the rules and regulations for proper naming of plants. When different, the cultivar database displays the correct(ed) ICNCP name, rather than its previous cultivar name.

Synonym for: Ryû sei
Japanese Maple Classification:

Hardiness Zone (for guidance only):

5 to 9
Ryu sen (DSN) Ryusen (frequently). Under Japanese rules, where it is seen under both names, Ryūsei is the primary name. Because the name Ryūsen is patented in the USA, it may not be written Ryū-sen, regardless of the logical necessity of separating the words. (ED)
NB, Esveld Collection lists it separately from Ryû sei. It is complicated to know for sure that this is a synonym for ryūsei, but it appears so. 竜泉, which means "Fountain of the Dragon" differes in Kanji and meaning from Ryūsei. It is also seen as 流泉, "Flowing Spring." But the maples, both from Saitama, are morphologically identical. Ryūsen has a plant patent in the US. But the later list publishing of Ryūsei favors its use according to Japanese naming rules, and it is so favored by both Yano and Nakajima. as well as Vertrees/Gregory. (ED)
