佐男姫, Sao-hime, means Princess Sao. The reading is an ateji, which is to say phonetic. The name can be connected to 佐保姫, the sacred Goddess of Spring, with the following evidence. The on'yomi reading of 男 is yū. A 1923 maple , listed as sayū-yama and spelled 佐男山, is given as a synonym for 佐保山, Sao-yama, the mountain of said Goddess. This ateji and synonomy allows us to say with some certainty that this Sao-hime does indeed reference the legendary Goddess of Spring. (ED)
