五月紅, Satsuki-beni, means "Red in May" or more poetically "Red in Early Summer." This likely refers to the red tips that contrast with the yellow-ish leaves. (ED)

Satsuki beni is an upright palmatum with lime green leaves, growing to 16 to 18' tall. Its bright color allows it to stand out in the landscape. The fall color is an excellent orange and red. (DSN)
