鹿毛織錦, Shikage-ori-nishiki, is a name with a complicated background. It means "Brocade Woven from Deer-hair." 鹿=shika, deer, and 毛=ke (ge with rendaku) meaning hair.織, ori means weaving, and as usual, nishiki means Brocade. In the Koidzumi lists, this name appears as 'Kageori nishiki'. "Ka" is a valid on'yomi reading of the ku'yomi Shika, so that ka + ke (hair) leaves "Kage" after the rendaku. This aligns Western sources, which rely on Chikinsho (1719) with Koidzumi's 1711 interpretation. (ED)

Shikage ori nishiki is an old Japanese variety, seldom grown. The new foliage is purple red soon fading to a dull green. It will grow as a wide tree to about 14 feet. Fall colors are yellow and orange. (DSN)
