Shindeshojo(Hilliers Manual 2014/DSN), Shin de shohjoh (Esveld). 新出猩々, Shin-deshōjō. "New Deshōjō." Although DNS translates this as "New hands of a young girl", this is incorrect. Shōjō is the red ape-like sea-spirit who loves alcohol, with Orangutan-like red hair. (Another meaning is indeed Orangutan, though this was introduced later). The prefix "de" means "coming out, emerging", and "shin" as a prefix means "new". In this case, as with other Shin- names, it really just means "New Deshōjō", usually thought to refer to an improved version of the original cultivar. For more information see 'Deshōjō'. (ED)
Shin deshojo is an upright maple with flaming pink-scarlet leaves in spring. Its summer color is a mottled green, slightly sprinkled variegated, and its fall color is a brilliant red. It has better color than and lasts longer than any flowering tree. Shin deshojo is taller than Beni maiko, but still will only grow to be approximately 12'. (DSN, as Shindeshojo)
