品川, Shinagawa, is a shoreside ward in Tokyo that contains importamt waterways, industry and Tennozu Isle: 品川区 Shinagawa Ward. For this reason the name is not hyphenated, as it doesn't refer to a river, though the name means "Goods River." In 1745 the name changed to the homophonic 品河, still "Goods River" and Shinagawa, but the second character representing a more important and larger river. Nakajima, and the city, retained the original spelling however. (ED)
