忍ヶ岡, Shinobu-ga-oka, means "The Hill Endures." It is in fact a particular hill, now known as Ueno Park in Tokyo, home to the famous Shinobazu Pond (不忍池, Ephemeral Pond). Most references to Shinoba-ga-oka, Shinobu Hill, now come classical 18th century Japanese art; there seem few contemporary references. (ED)
