The historical list gives the name 染との, Some-tono, which we retain, though it should properly be Some-dono with the rendaku. 染殿, means "Dyeing Palace." It refers specifically to a residence in Kyoto during the Heian, a prominent mansion of the Fujiwara clan. The dyes were mostly made from natural plant materials, and the specificities around Somedono are extensively documented in Heian literature and historical texts. (ED)
