高雄, Takao, almost certainly refers to the mountainous hills northwest of Kyoto, famous for autumn foliage and home to famous temples. The literal translation of the name is "High Eminence," although it would not be interpreted in that way. It is one of the oldest cultivars, number one on the 1695 list. Whether this plant is the same today is of course uncertain. (ED)

Takao is an upright green palmatum, bushy in habit, that holds its leaves in clusters. It is reminiscent of a tree form of Ryuzu. Fall's color is excellent gold and orange. (DSN)
