多武峰, Tōnomine, "Tōnomine Peak" is a mountain steeped in Japanese history. Its fame is such, and the ubiquity of its name so widespread, that is is left unhyphenated. (I.e., not Tōno-mine. Note, there is no particle, so writing Tō-no-mine was always incorrect). Tōnomine hosted the secret discussions between Nakatomi no Kamatari, later founder of the Fujiwara clan, and Prince Naka no Ōe, later Emperor Tenji, which led to the Taika Reform of 645 CE. The reform was a complete administrative overhaul, with land redistribution and a new tax system. The Tanzan Shrine is said to have been the location of the talks. Upon Kamatari's death, his remains were removed to the Shrine where an immense pagoda was erected in his honor. The 13 story pagoda was rebuilt in 1532 at the Tanzan Shrine, itself a famous and beautiful site for admiring spectacular autumn maple colors. (ED)
