東大寺, Tōdai-ji, the "Eastern Great Temple" in Nara, was founded in 738 CE. The large complex was once among the Seven Great Temples of Nara. Built in a style imitating the Chinese Tang dynasty, it houses the world's largest bronze statue of the Buddha Daibutsu and is the Japanese headquarters of the Kegon school of Buddhism. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and houses Japanese National Treasures. The tree that grows with this impressive name is planted in Nara Park. (ED)
