土蜘蛛, Tsuchi-gumo, means "Soil Spider", reflecting the twisting leaves of this small maple. Kumo, spider, changes to gumo due to the usual rendaku or internal consonant change. (ED)

Tsuchigumo is a semi-dwarf tree with small green crinkled leaves. New growth is a rosy red that transitions to a bright green. The fall color is a bright gold and red. Tsuchigumo is only about 10' at maturity, making it ideal for patio use. (The ground spider) (DSN)
