宇陀, Uda, is named after the city of Uda in Nara Prefecture. Surrounded by mountains, Uda is an ancient city, mentioned historically as early as the Nara period (710-745 CE), and politically important through much of Japan's history. Many beautiful ancient buildings are preserved in the Castle Town (jōkamachi) where the feudal warlords ruled, making it an important tourist destination today. (ED)
