我たつ杣, Waga-tatsu-sawa, is an epithet dedicated to the foresters of Japan: it means "Our Tree-felling Woodsmen." Indeed, these workers were critical, providing lumber for the constant building of rebuilding of temples and other structures, often transporting logs over great distances. The epithet itself is a bit complicated: the first character 我 is the nominative pronoun, I/we/our. The kana たつ, is overwhelmingly translated into the kanji combination 立つ, with tatsu mostly a verb holding the meaning "to stand"; however in certain contexts, such as this one, it also means "to fell/cut down." This leads to the translation "Our tree felling Woodsmen." (ED)
