大和魂, Yamato-damashii, means "Japan Spirit." For this 1903 epithet, Nakajima gives the shown kanji spelling, but includes an unusual romanization, Yamato damashi-i, with the corresponding Hiragana やまとだましい supplying the final 'i'. This seems a non-standard way of writing 'ii', and indeed Kenykusha 4th ed. gives us the correct Modified Hepburn romanization: "tamashii" (Spirit or Soul) to indicate the long 'i' phonetically. The standard rendaku consonant voicing change thus gives us the fully compliant epithet: Yamato-damashii. amato (大和) is the classical name for Japan, connecting to the central Yamato Province and meaning "Great Harmony." This symbology is connected to the earlier mythological name for Japan, Akitsushima (秋津島), which means "Dragonfly Island." (ED)
