大和笠, Yamato-gasa, is probably best interpreted in the plural "Japan's Hats", with the implied の, no, particle in the kanji, as is often the case. There are many different kinds of hats throughout the history of Japan, from those worn by warriors of different classes, to those worn artistically, or simply to keep off rain or sun. There is no added precision in the name. 笠, kasa, means hat(s), and becomes gasa through the usual rendaku consonant voicing change. Yamato (大和) is the classical name for Japan, connecting to the central Yamato Province and meaning "Great Harmony." This symbology is connected to the earlier mythological name for Japan, Akitsushima (秋津島), which means "Dragonfly Island." (ED)
