淀川, Yodo-gawa means the River Yodo. The Yodo is the main river that cuts across Osaka, finding its source at Lake Biwa and finally feeding into Osaka Bay with its shipyards and industry. The Yodo has had a practically incalculable affect on Japanese history and culture, influencing everything from the choice of the capital during the Heian to being featured in The Tale of Genji (that part of the river called the Uji).
