雪のかつら, Yuki-no-katsura, is how this epithet from 1782 is spelled for us. "katsura" may refer to one of two things, the Katsura Tree (Cercidiphyllum japonicum), as 桂, often encountered in maple epithets, or 鬘, also katsura, meaning a wig or hairpiece, such as would be used in Noh or Kabuki theater. However, the "wig" meaning is almost always spelled using kana only, and makes perfect sense for imagining a maple, after a fresh snowfall, appearing to wear a wig of snow. Therefore we interpret this name as 雪の鬘, meaning "Wig of Snow." (ED)
