残雪, Zan-setsu, means "The Last of the Snow." It evokes the Buddhist mujo concept, the transience of life and love, which is so deeply rooted in Japanese culture. It is also associated with endurance, another deeply Japanese cultural concept. Representing the beginning of spring and rebirth, Zansetsu appears frequently in Japanese poetry, from ancient times through to the present. Both these words are on'yomi, Sino Japanese readings, as we frequently see in a more formal or poetic setting. (For example, the kun'yomi, Native Japanese reading, for "snow" is "yuki.") Zan is more specifically a Go-on, or more commonly used reading, as opposed to the Kan-on reading "san." Note, the Checklist 1st ed. incorrectly transcribed this name as "Zan su." (ED)
