Japanese Maple Classification:

Zokumei does not appear to exist in Japan. Therefore we assume it is a western source, maybe DVDM. It might be a person's name, but the kanji spelling 俗名, also has a Chinese reading: sú míng, which means "Common Name" and therefore turns up in many Chinese plant lists. (ED)
