Acer
pictum
ICNCP Name: 'Oni-itaya-ki-fu'
Formerly 'Oni itayi kifu'
The International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants (ICNCP) establishes the rules and regulations for proper naming of plants. When different, the cultivar database displays the correct(ed) ICNCP name, rather than its previous cultivar name.

鬼板屋黄斑, Oni-itaya-ki-fu, means "Yellow Spotted Demon of a Painted Maple." Recall that Painted Maple, Itaya-kaede, is the common name for Acer pictum. It is unknown whether this maple is related to Oni-itaya-fuiri, but the similarity in names suggests they may have been selected from the same parent, or even the same seed tray, although such speculation is without source support. As with the similarly-named maple, we can guess that some unruly aspect of the plant caused the selections to be named after the powerful and unpredictable oni. We have separated 黄斑, ki-fu, in keeping with the ICNCP directive for maximum clarity, especially to demonstrate it is not the same as 貴婦, kifu, meaning "noblewoman." (ED)
