常盤錦, Tokiwa-nishiki, means "Brocade of Tokiwa" literally, but metaphorically "Endless Brocade." Although it is possible that the plant is named after Tokiwa-cho, in Kashihara, Nara, the spelling has another sense: evergreen, or perpetual. It is likely in this more metaphorical usage that Tokiwa often appears, and from the earliest recorded dates, e.g. Tokiwa-yama, (under Tokiwa) "Eternal Mountain." (ED) Tokiwa-nishiki (Esveld)
