裏日本, Ura-Nihon, means "Hidden Japan." 裏, ura, has many meanings depending on context, "underside", "back", "opposite side", "behind" or indeed that adopted here "Hidden side." For a maple specialist studying and naming cultivars of Acer pictum, "Hidden Japan" almost certainly refers to the trails and byways, rarely seen even by locals, where plant explorers venture in search of undiluted species and unusual specimens. This applies even more with the various endemic species of Japan which largely hybridize freely and frequently. (ED)
