大和常盤錦, Yamato-tokiwa-nishiki, means "Japan's Native Tokiwa-nishiki." Yano produced this cultivar from 'Tokiwa-nishiki', and although that plant is already Japanese, listed by Sekihin Binran in 1882, Yano-san may, rightly, have felt that the Nara Maple World park, where the plant was produced, was the beating heart of Japanese Maples in Japan and worldwide. This contemporary version of Tokiwa-nishiki features an additional yellow component in the variegation to go along with fine Autumn colors of yellow and red. (ED)
