木曽谷錦, Kiso-dani-nishiki, means "The Brocade of the Kiso Valley," surely referring to the forested slopes of the deep valleys and gorges of the Kiso river, sparsely inhabited. 谷, tani (valley), follows the usual rendaku voicing change to become dani. Historically, the Kiso Valley was an important trade route, but because of the difficulty of passage other routes were used. Still, during the Edo period the Kisokaidō (Nakasendō) -- the Central Mountain Route -- was one of the five centrally administered routes, and connected Edo to Kyoto. (ED)
