小淵沢錦, Kobuchizawa-nishiki means "Brocade of Kobuchizawa." Kobuchizawa Town (小淵沢町) in Yamanashi has borders reaching up from the valley to the peak of 2,715 m Mt. Gongen, the forested slopes and local ski areas all forming parts of the Yatsugatake Park of Nature and Culture. Doubtless the "Brocade" refers to the pastiche of beautiful autumn colors on the mountains sides. Deep in the valley, the small town of Kobuchizawa, 小淵沢 seems to have a descriptive name, meaning Small with Deep Pools and Marshes. The standard rendaku voicing change applies to sawa (marsh) forming zawa. The same rendaku change occurs with fuchi (pools) becoming buchi. (ED)
