屋久島錦, Yakushima-nishiki, means "Yakushima Brocade", referring to the heavily forested island of Yakushima. While the maples on this sub-tropical island are not the usual Section Palmata that we associate with kōyō, autumn colors, the Snakebark maples -- Section Macrantha -- are well represented there, with Acers rufinerve, morifolium, capillipes and others giving a lively, if less flamboyant exhibition. Yakushima Brocade probably speaks to this tapestry of yellows, golds, scattered in with the reds or oranges, of the beautiful autumn on the island paths. Yakushima Island is a UNESCO Word Heritage Site. (ED)
