葛城山, Katsuragi-san, means "Mountains of the Katsuragi." The Katsuragi were a powerful clan of ancient Japan, sometimes even rivaling the Yamato Imperial Court. Like the city Katsuragi-cho, the mountains, west of the city, take their name from the family. They are associated with kami (demons and deities), in particular Hitokotonushi no Kami, The God of One Word, who could grant wishes or prophesy in a single word, mentioned in both the Kojiki and the Nihon Shoki, Japan's oldest chronicles.
